A photo book is an independent work in book form, in which photographic material becomes a unified whole and creates a visual narrative — it tells a story. This is what distinguishes it from a photo album, which simply serves to display individual photos or photo series.

The workshop is intended for beginner photographers who are working on a photo book or are interested in creating one.

Following the introduction, a few participants chosen at random will have the opportunity to showcase their own photographic material. The workshop will be led by Otar Karalashvili, who will thoroughly review the photos and guide the group through developing the concept, selecting images, establishing visual sequences, and shaping a visual narrative. This process will help participants form a clearer vision for their own photo book project.

During the workshop, you will learn how various elements work in different photo books — such as photo selection and sequence, branching composition and dramaturgy, book format, design and typography, paper type, printing and binding technology — and how they contribute to creating a cohesive final work.

A select number of participants will be randomly chosen to share their photo materials with the entire group for collaborative work. If you'd like your photos to be considered for this opportunity, please prepare your materials according to the guidelines below: Print the material on a regular color laser printer on plain paper — high-quality prints are not required. Arrange 4 to 8 photos per A4 sheet and cut out individual photos according to size. Do not pre-select or limit the material — bring all photos related to your project so we have a wide selection to work from. You may also bring any additional material related to the project.

No prior experience in working with photo books is necessary.

1 in-person session: May 31, 2025 1:00 PM. Duration: 4 hours.
